Lucky

Cat lying in a woven basket on a windowsill with plants around

Lucky has come a long way.  Once scared and untouchable, he now runs into the kitchen every morning to say hello - and won't eat a meal without asking for pets first.

Two cats, one orange and one tabby, lying together inside a cat house.

When we adopted Lucky, we knew he might never trust enough to be petted.  But we knew we could provide him a good home with plenty of space, constant access to a screened porch to watch the birds, and a supply of food that he would never need to compete for - that was worth it.

The transformation was slow, but with patience and persistence, he began to realize that we meant no harm.  Now, he meows for pets and rubs against our legs while wagging his little stub of a tail with so much excitement.  He'll even tolerate a brief pick-up as long as we don't get him too far off the ground.

Lucky has a neon green stuffed mouse he's claimed as his own, tossing it around when no one's watching.  And every night before bed, he plays tag with Dusty,  sprinting from room to the next.  It brings us so much joy to know he feels comfortable enough to let his guard down and play.

He still won't sleep with us, but every once in a while, on a lazy morning, he will jump on the bed for a few minutes to get some pets.

Lucky may never be a lap cat, but we know he feels safe here.  He enjoys basking in the sun and can regularly be found laying in his upside-down-superman pose, a sign that he is sleeping hard without a care in the world.
